OPPOSITION
RELATIONSHIP
A. Using Although/Eventhough/Though.
1. Although/eventhough/though
use to show the relation of differences between 2 ideas. Although/eventhough/though is always followed by sentence or clause
and they can put in front of the sentence or clause with a verb.
Example
:
a.
Although
we tried our best, we still lost the match.
b.
We
still lost the match, although we tried our best.
2. Though
is more formal if we use in a sentence and it puts at the of new sentence.
Example : We all tried our best. We still lost the
match though.
3. Although
or though can use before adjective or
adverb.
Example
:
a. Her
success was important although/though
long time.
b. He
did the job well although/though slowly.
B.
Using
Despite/In spite of.
1. Despite
or In spite of also can use to show
the relation of differences between 2 ideas. It is always followed by noun or
noun phrase. It can put in the beginning or the middle of the sentence.
Example
:
a. Despite
our best effort, we still lost the match.
b. We
still lost the match in spite of our
best effort.
c. In spite of
our best effort, we still lost the match.
d. We
still lost the match in spite of our
best effort.
C.
Using
But... anyway, But...still, Yet...still.
1. But...anyway,
but...still, yet...still, can use to show the opposition relationship between 2
ideas. Those are categorised as conjunctions, but are usually followed by
clause.
Example
:
a. We
tried our best, but we lost the match
anyway.
b. We
tried our best, but we still lost the match.
c. We
tried our best, yet we still lost the match.
D.
Using
Transitions: Nevertheless, Nonetheless, However.
1. Nevertheless,
nonetheless, however can use to show the
opposition relationship between 2 ideas. Those are followed by a new sentence.
Example
:
a. We
tried our best. Nevertheless, we lost
the match.
b. We
tried our best. Nonetheless, we lost
the match.
c. We
tried our best. However, we lost the
mstch.
